I just sent my mother a stack of DVDs for her birthday. One was "Holiday". I do love that film.

Don Ameche was good in screwball, too. Ever see "Midnight"? 1939; it's a late one, but wonderful. And now it's available on DVD.

I recently received Bringing Up Baby and it's hard to believe that I hadn't seen this movie before now! It was great! Seeing Hepburn as a "Madcap" heiress was a refreshing change of pace and Asta has got to be one of the great supporting dogs of all time. Fresh off of his triumph in the first two Thin Man movies and The Awful Truth, the canine delivers another Oscar-worthy performance for Howard Hawks!

Sarah and I watched Leatherheads last weekend. It was a nice homage to screwball comedies. It was no It Happened One Night, but it was still a lot of fun. And the costumes and sets were superb!

Oh, good! I've really been wanting to see that.

Clooney does have a nice touch with vintage.

A good, fun book about screwball comedies is, appropriately enough , Screwball by Ed Sikov. I have reread it several times. It is scholarly, but breezy enough, with great photos and nice overall design.

It's out of print, but it can be found - expensively it seems. Maybe in your local library.

Or Very Happy your local online auction...

Just found that one.

Anyway, it is absolutely worth a look.

H'mm.

I don't think I have that one! It's worth looking into.

Thanks, Dread Scott.

Mon Plaisir, Lindydiva. It is out of print, thus accounting somewhat for it's inflated price on Amazon. I promise you, I didn't pay anything like $60 for my copy.

It has in the back a selected fimlography that ranks the films in question, and whether or not they are available on videotape, betraying it's 1989 print date. That'd be about (though I think I got it at Half-Price Books a few years later, but only a few) when I bought it... which doesn't seem like almost 20 years ago. *sigh*

The best line up of scheduled screwball I've seen for one day!

Oh, Lord - What a lineup - and the evening ain't bad (if you like monster flicks), either! At 3:30am, a classic Harold Lloyd, too.

Yes!

If we decide to stay in town, I'll be glued to the tube for a change. (Plenty of iced champagne at hand.)

Try having popcorn with your champagne - I promise you, it is a grand combination, especially with old movies to watch.

An almost sublime experience.

Did anyone know about these upcoming Screwball Comedy DVD sets? They're listed as being by Sony so I hope they're legit. They have some highly-sought after movies--at least sought after by me:

I didn't know.

I've seen two of those (and have Theodora Goes Wild, which I adore). H'mmm.

Well, I've just been playing on Amazon with a gift card and bought myself the Carole Lombard Glamour Collection, and The Rage of Paris, as well as some James Cagney and other great stuff.

Better wait for a while!
