I'm not really sure if this is the right forum, but I couldn't find a better one. (psst.... home decorating forum Smile )

Anyway, my question to all of you is about how you decorate. Do you try to stick to one era or do you mix and match? My goal has always been to have my home look like someone has lived there from about the 1930's to the 1950's and unlike having a house that looks like a magazine spread from one era, have a mix of things. This is primarily because I haven't been able to limit my buying to one era. Laughing So how do you like to decorate? Are you disciplined enough to stick to one era unlike me!? Pictures are always good too if you've got 'em. Wink

I wish I was disciplined enough to really pick a style and stick to it, but my house ranges from 20s to 50s. Ideally, I'd even pick a year and have nothing older than that- 1946 seems to be a good one, based on some of the stuff I have. But my house was built in 1960 so there's no avoiding that fact. Try as I might, I can't really get it to feel anything other than 50s.
(Sorry for the size of some of the photos- I can't get Photobucket to resize them>)

I do have an entire guest room done with 30s deco furniture:

The upstairs bath is very 50s (love that pink tile!):
decorating styles? 100_1437

My kitchen is kind of 40s/50s retro:
decorating styles? 100_1027
decorating styles? 100_1031

The family room is probably the most 50s of all, except for the 1940 fridge (which works, and I would love to move up to the kitchen, but its impractically small). I'd also like to move the dinette set up to the kitchen and do it all 50s, but we have a "nice" modern set there now.

Our vintage furniture consists of a 50s sofabed and armchair, a large bookshelf unit, a small display cabinet and several G Plan tables. Our other bookshelves and record and cd units are modern.

I would love to replace the modern furniture with vintage or vintage style furniture, several oak or teak bookshelves would do us nicely.

As we rent the kitchen and bathroom are already fitted but ideally I would have a kitchen very similar to Susies! I really like the English Rose fitted kitchen (Telegraph article here, reproduction kitchen here). A nice 30s style bathroom with black and white tiling or with an eau-de-nil colour scheme would be nice.

Not many houses in any decade are showhomes, most will be a mixture of furniture from earlier decades so I'm quite happy to pick and choose from the 30s to the early 60s, much like everything else!

Embarassed Yep. That's where all the magic happens...

I was going to take a new picture, but there's laundry on it now also...

Thanks for the links, Miss R! I had no idea someone was making reproductions of the steel cabinets. My last apartment in San Francisco still had the Crosley steel cabinets from the 50's... unfortunately, they had been painted over with regular house paint. A good source I came across for lots of good information in general, but particularly steel cabinets is www.retrorenovation.com.

Well, here's what we had to work with when we bought the house:
decorating styles? Bathroombefore

I can't figure out why the old owners painted the thing like the inside of a swimming pool. When we first looked at the house the walls & ceiling were white, which in hindsight must have been primer for the electric blue. When we did the walk-through before settlement we were quite surprised to see the blue. And it was high-gloss to boot, which was a pain to paint over. There was an old flourescent fixture in there that made the room look violet when we turned it on.

The first thing we did (during the walk-through, even before we officially owned it) was rip up the carpet. I thought it was brown, but when we yanked out the vanity, it was actually pink. affraid Then we re-painted it white, put in a new tile floor, replaced the band of blue tile with black and put in a new sink and light.

How could I have missed this thread?? Susie I love your house and the pink bathroom I'm drooling over! Here's a recent living room picture. I guess I'm a 50's kinda girl with a love of Heywood Wakefield!

Fantastic room! Oh, to have anything that matches.

We'll soon be having our 50s sofabed re-upholstered (which is costing more than a new, modern sofa) so we might have some pics in September.

I hear ya, all my Heywake I've bought piece by piece at various auctions. It took awhile to get a nice living room set together.

Makes me wonder why reupholstering something should be more expensive then new?? Doesn't seem right.

Because modern furniture is absolute crap. Strip a new sofa back and I'd wager it would be nailed-together, cheap pine with not a single proper joint.

Furniture is mass produced nowadays, so the man hours taken to make a new sofa is very low when compared to reupholstering an old one.

It's similar to restoring an old car. Pay to have this done, and you can easily drop twenty grand for a full nut and bolt restoration.

A new car of a similar quality would cost about half that.

You're paying for someones time, plain and simple.

Wow Mary! Your livingroom is to die for!

Lost Soul, we really need to have our 1950's sofa bed redone as well... it was perfect when we got it, but the fabric is old and a looser weave and now it seems like a new hole appears daily. Sad I just haven't gotten around to finding out how much it would cost....

If I remember correctly we'll be paying around 1200 to have the sofabed and matching chair re-upholstered in a fairly cheap fabric.

I see. Well I have a friend who is a very good upholsterer. Can't guarantee it, but he may be able to beat your quote. You would have to deliver though, as he hasn't got transport.
