Three shorts revolving around passengers of an ocean liner at sea, I think coming from Paris.
Short 1 James Mason plays Charles Coudray, a well-known ballet director. Moira Shearer, is a ballerina who performs for him, knowing it will kill her heart. Very long ballet sequence.
Short 2 Tommy (very young Ricky Nelson) is a 12-year-old boy travelling with his French governess and tutor (Leslie Caron); and he's bored out of his mind. He happens upon a witch, Mrs. Pennicott (Ethel Barrymore) and suddenly Tommy is a grown man (played by Farley Granger) who falls in love with Caron. Disturbing premise but it works out. Governess incest? Too much melodramatic Caron spouting poetry.
Short 3 - This one is terrific.
Kirk Douglas plays Pierre Narval who rescues Nina (Pier Angeli) from a suicide leap in Seine. She has lost the will to live and so has he. Together they become a circus team and I wondered how much of the trapeze work did Douglas do. He was a stud. This was the most satisfying romance as it involved two equals with real chemistry. Also I was getting used to hokey premise by this point. I really liked Douglas and Angeli. Recommend highly.
