By "Us", I mean my Ever-Lovin' and me.

Here's her entry in a Retro Renovation contest

Also, if you've never been to that site, you should check it out. Spend some time on the Retro House Blogs (on the lower right). Some bee-YOOtiful homes.

What a cool site! Thanks for sharing. When I get a moment I may have something to add as well- I especially love the pink bathroom part!

And your find is pretty neat. I love vintage product packaging. I've been collecting quite a bit of it lately- I'm trying to turn even the insides of my kitchen cabinets into a vintage dream. (Yes, I am a bit obsessed... Twisted Evil )

We should get together- I have a box of paper straws that would go great with your cups! Laughing

Ohho! Without obsessions, where would we be? I'd love to see what your cabinets look like!

The cups were in a kitchen cabinet when we started living in this house... as were some other old items which were pretty cool.

PAPER straws... I haven't seen those in a while. And I'm glad you liked the site. I thought it was pretty neat.

Hah! Those are a little long for the li'l cups in question. THAT is some stunning packaging. Nice dinette and table juke, too!

Thanks- I love that dinette set. I'd really like to have it up in the kitchen to use everyday. (Right now it's in the game room) The wallbox is hooked up to a real jukebox around the corner.

GAH! AND the matching chairs?! That's one impressive set! I think I may have caught a glimpse of those in some other pics you've posted, but I am struck anew. The tabletop juke setup just makes it cooler. When you say "hooked up", do you mean it is fully operational (that you can pick your tunes from the table top), or that you can listen to tunes from the other juke through it? Or something like that...

Sue has GREAT stuff!

Well, we just found out that the upstairs bath is even worse than we thought...so we have to have the sub floor fixed and a new tiled floor. We're hoping to get the existing POS tub mended and re-glazed for the time being, and perhaps have the bashed in tiles replaced, too. Psycho Boy-the-previous-owner was a real piece of work!

Any recommendations for getting a Deco bath with the smallest possible cash outlay?

It's going to be black and white; octagonal tile, I hope. We already have the pedestal sink and repro Deco faucet for the sink (will have to make due with the ugly 1980s fixtures in the tub for now).

I'm thinking of getting enough repro Deco fabric for not just window curtains but also a shower curtain. I'll Scotchguard the shower curtain, and maybe I can find a duck curtain to use as a "lining".

Does anyone have any ideas for good bathroom storage? No vanity or medicine cabinet, we're going to put in a big circular mirror over the sink.

You could always put a cocktail cabinet in there.

That's an excellent idea, if I can find one. Might be able to...there's a very good antiques center about 25 minutes away where we found the doctor's cabinet we put into the powder room.

Scour Craig's List- maybe even post a want ad. Hopefully you'll turn up some good fixtures, lighting, etc. Plenty of people are ripping out period bathrooms and replacing them with modern dreck.

There was a good article in the December (I think) issue of Old House Journal on period bathrooms, including a deco one, but they didn't do them on the cheap.

You could still put in a medicine cabinet behind a circular mirror- just hinge it. I've seen some circular mirrors that already came with a medicine cabinet built in.

We don't have a medicine cabinet or vanity either, but we do have a linen closet in the bathroom. We just use it like a giant medicine cabinet & keep the linens in the hall closet. You could always build in something like that, but it probably wouldn't be cheap either.

The tabletop model (aka wallbox) is what they call a "remote selector" in the trade. It is just a listing of the selections available on the main jukebox. You can put your money in and make your selection right from your table instead of walking over to the jukebox, but there is no speaker and no actual record player in there.

It is hooked up via electrical wire (like an outdoor extension cord) to this:

When you put in your quarter and make your selections, the wallbox sends an electrical pulse to a receiver in the jukebox (it actually sounds like a telegraph tapping morse code). The receiver in the jukebox then sends an electrical pulse to the selection mechanism of the jukebox which plays the record. Does that make sense?

There were actually "tabletop" jukeboxes in the 30s, with a record player & speaker inside a small cabinet, but they were really meant for locations like a small bar. Anytime you see a diner wallbox like this, there must be a full size juke somewhere else to play the record. (Unless you're talking about modern satellite-radio jukes that they use in diners nowadays, but to me that's not the same.)

That makes sense - I haven't seen one in operation in many years. My memory (seeing some old ones still in operation as a child) is that they were a mystifying miracle. Thanks!
