PostSubject: 007 Then and Now......Thoughts?   Tue Mar 25, 2008 11:25 pm

Hi all,

I was watching the new James Bond film tonight and it's pretty good so far, heck I may even put a blog post up about or about Bond...anyway. I started thinking that Bond actually is appropriate for these boards if you stop and think about when he was created as well as Fleming's experiences during the war. Wikipedia says he was first created in '52, about the same time Spillane was in his creative phase.

"...Fleming did admit to being partly inspired by his service in the Naval Intelligence Division of the Admiralty, most notably an incident depicted in Casino Royale, when Fleming and Naval Intelligence Director Admiral Godfrey went on a mission to Lisbon en route to the United States during World War II." (Source: wikipedia, James Bond)

So if you like Bond, which one? Personally, I think LS would make a dashing Bond! So, for you folks across the pond, what's your take?

I'm not a huge fan and I still don't think we've had a perfect Bond. Maybe David Niven if Casino Royale counts.

As for me, I'd be lucky to make Clouseau.

I think Daniel Craig made a good stab at the role. I don't think any other actor had such pressure put on him, and such expectations to fail miserably at the role.
On the minus side, I thought the character was a bit too moody and broody at times, and the way he suddenly switched from cold, hard killer to Mr romantic fetch me my pipe and slippers left me wondering if it was all a bit of a wind-up.

I guess the 'Bourne' films scared the living daylights out of the Bond franchise (no pun intended) and they felt the need to mix in a bit more grit into what was a very tired formula of exotic locations and glamourous women.

My favourite Bond film has always been 'From Russia with Love'.

No over the top gadgets, a plausible plot and good supporting roles.

Good point Andy,

I honestly missed some of the gadgets, guess I loved the campy bit!

Well Roger Moore (appropriate name for an actor playing 007) hammed it up something chronic, some of his Bond films bordered on slapstick. 'For your eyes only' wasn't so bad.

Timothy Dalton came across well in his first outing, but appeared more like a sulky teenager who's been grounded in 'License to kill'. I enjoyed Goldeneye with Pierce Brosnan in the role, but the later films left me cold.

George Lazenby will be forever lambasted as a poor Bond. I quite liked the film, cracking theme tune by John Barry. But Lazenby was miscast in the role- came across as too wooden.

Do you know, I've never ever noticed that double entendre in my life. I must be slipping!

If he could do an English accent, I'd choose Jean Servais as my perfect bond.

I didn't care for Sean Connery as Bond when I first started seeing them, but I put that down to the age gap between them and me. His Bond was chauvanistic and a touch too misanthropic for my liking. The way women were portrayed put me right off. The movies struck me as Thunderbirds meets reality or something. If you know what I mean. Oddly enough, I quite like the Connery Bonds now.

I liked Roger Moore's more suave Bond, though some of the acting was pretty chronic. Chronically awful. But then the actors aren't to blame for crappy writing. Wasn't too impressed with Timothy Dalton. Loved Pierce Brosnan, but the last two movies weren't great. Thats what happens when you try to compensate for lack of a decent script with OTT FX.

I wasn't sure I'd like Daniel Craig as Bond (I can't think why not. He's an excellent actor) but Casino Royale was great. It had an up to date look and feel to it that had been lacking. Loved the free running in CR.

I'm glad Judi Dench has been kept on as M. As a woman who's breeched the bastions of a traditionally Old Boys Club, she gives M a certain cold, hard, ball busting detachment thats contrasted by the odd reference to her personal life. Something you never saw with the male M's. Perhaps thats to counter the ball busting? Twisted Evil Go Judi!

I adore Daniel Craig. Absolutely. "Layer Cake" was a great flick.

No other Bond has ever made me swoon. and isn't that the point?

Just hijacking the thread here, didn't Pierce B. do a flick with a retired mobster on the run....I saw previews and it reminded me of some of the 007 stuff.

I'll have to admit the Bourne movies certainly give 007 a run for its money!

And the Bourne movies were all great. Unusual for sequels.
