I have to second Lost Soul's motion that Goodis is God! Even when the story just drifts along he is very gripping. I've just finished Shoot the Piano Player which was excellent, much better than the film.

His characters are loners, longshoremen, dockers and drifters. Things happen to them, they get in situations, they struggle with things that never get resolved and usually will end up in the same position as at the start. The books can be quite bleak but they are an enthralling read.

I thoroughly recommend Goodis!

Just watched "Nightfall" on Turner Classic Movies.

1956, b&w.

It was fantastic. Now I'm hooked and am heading out later to find some Goodis in earnest.
