Just watched The Killing. Phew, what an ending! Sterling Hayden on top form in this ill-fated heist thriller.

8/10

Sweet Smell of Success (1957) - excellent film noir. Shown last night as a warm up for the U.S. series Mad Men that's starting tonight. This is the first time I'd heard of Sweet Smell of Success and I really enjoyed it. 8/10.

Speaking of enjoy, I'm really looking forward to Mad Men. Not so much for the story (the rise of advertising in the 60's), but for the fashion and furnishings. How fun would that have been to scour the country looking for vintage for the show!

Bound For Glory-5/10 I found this movie dull, which is suprising considering it;s about Woody guthrie, The Dust Bowl and Unions. There was a really well done scene of a dust storm that was quite compelling and I enjoyed the music.

Stardust.

9 out of 10

It was great fun! If you like The Princess Bride this is right up your alley. I loved it. In fact, before we were finished watching the DVD extras I ordered the book it's based on.

Robert DeNiro's pirate captain is...well-worth watching. pirat

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day ...10, 10, 10! Can you tell I kinda liked it? Smile They really got the feel of movies from the late 1930's perfectly as well as the fashions.

I can't say that I just saw it, but Three on a Match was on TCM recently and I really liked it. It's a great pre-code film that has Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak and Bette Davis as three pals from boarding school who meet up again years later in various levels of life. Ann Dvorak gets the best role as a rich wife who abandons everything to become the cocaine fiend moll of a heroin addicted crook. They kidnap her son to get daddy's money, but the kid (and the hapless junkie lovers) are re-kidnapped by Humphrey Bogart as an even nastier mobster who plans to wring MORE money out of the kid or knife him. The ending is a little over the top but... (highlight with your mouse to see spoilers) with only seconds to spare before they break into the room and murder her child, she hides the kid under the bed, scrawls a desperate message on her nightgown with lipstick, then jumps out the closed window to her death on the pavement below as pedestrians scream and scatter. Police - and redemption - are now only moments away.

Now that's entertainment! Huzzah!

If it's anything like the book it'll be fabulous!

I did a terrible thing where I bought the book for a friend for Christmas, read the first page on the train coming home from shopping and before I knew it I had read the whole book Embarassed. It's such a brilliant book.

I didn't know there was a film made of it- I wonder when it will come out over here.

Last night I watched about 30 minutes of Brick. It was my second attempt; the first lasting ten minutes. I don't get it- it's like Bugsy Malone without the good clothes. Young, geeky kids given a street savvy, and mosty incomprehensible, neo-noir dialogue for no apparent reason. Odd.

3/10 for the first 30 minutes

I haven't read the book... will have to get that. The movie though is just a wonderful mix of comedy with poignant moments mixed in. Even though it is a comedy, it definitely has a message.

I have recently watched "The Lady Eve" with Barbara Stanwyck. I loved it...great fashion too. I rate that a 9!

And last night I watched "How to Marry a Millionaire". Adorable! Starring Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, and Betty Grable. I rate that, 8!

Grand Hotel. For the first time, too!

I had no idea Wallace Beery could act! I suppose it was before he was entirely typecast (1932); I was impressed.

Everyone else was incredible too, obviously. Both Barrymores (John & Lionel), Joan Crawford, Garbo, and all.

I loved the dachshund, too. And such lovely sets. The whole feel really was very cosmopolitan. MGM did better work early on. This is a wonderful film.

9 out of 10.

The Common Touch (1941)

On the death of his father, an eighteen-year old lad leaves school to
take over the family firm in the City of London. Realising the other
directors want to keep him in the dark he starts asking questions, and
is soon undercover as a down-and-out in a hostel which will disappear
if a company building project goes ahead.

A very enjoyable film with a bit of Greta Gynt leaping all over the nightclub and also Carroll Gibbons tinkling the ivories. The musical numbers in the hostel are better than the club scenes though.

Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day.

As others have mentioned, it was wonderful. Very charming. I think we will buy the DVD when it comes out.

Excellent set-dressing and costuming. Hair & make-up were good, too. I liked the characters. And now that I know it's based on a book, I'm going to hunt for that.

A solid 8/10.

Hunt no more! Try Persephone Books. It is a fantastic publishing house which reprints forgotten classics from the twentieth century. A lot of their books are books that were extremely popular when first published but have since been out of print.

Yes, I found them online yesterday.

Now it's on a wishlist, along with the soundtrack!

Got to see 'The Aviator' last night. Missed this one at the cinema, so I was glad the beeb broadcast it so I didn't have to sit through any adverts.

I enjoyed the film, didn't make the mistake of trying to tell Hughes whole life story and the effects were stunning- really nice to see traditional modelmaking being used instead of souped up CGI effects.

Three Comrades. Based on the novel by Remarque. It was terrifically good.

1937 or '39, I think. Franchot Tone, Robert Young, and Robert Taylor (?). And Margaret Sullivan.

G-Men, 1935. James Cagney (I needed a Cagney fix, we rented it last night.)

We loved it. I'd give it an 8.5.

We went to the new Indy flick on Thursday. While he may be eligible for a senior's bus pass, Harrison still makes a decent action hero! 8/10

Sweet Smell of Success (1957) - six out of ten

With Burt Lancaster and a young Tony Curtis.

This movie is highly aclaimed, and I agree that the acting was great, especially by Tony Curtis. But, the movie is all about society status and reputation; something that doesn't appear to be as important these days, so I had a hard time latching on to some of the drama. Admittedly, it was a lot more important in the 1950s.

On A Clear Day - unemployed Glaswegian dock worker swims English Channel. Touching and very funny 9/10

Sunshine - sun is dying. Absurdly young PhDs enroute with nuclear kickstart to remedy. Good movie but for the attempt by director Danny Boyle at surrealism in the last hour. 7/10

The Apartment (1960) - I love Billy Wilder's writing and directing and I never get tired of seeing this movie. One of MacLaine and Lemmon's best performances. 10/10.
