70 Anniversary of beginning of WW2

Today (3 September 2009) marks the 70th anniversary of the start of WW2.

The BBC have put together some archive footage from 1938-9 which highlights events from Chamberlain's Munich agreement to the declaration of war - BBC Archive.

There is also an article on Nicholas Winton, who organised the 'Kindertransports' from Czechoslovakia to Britain, Winton's Children.

I'm sure there will be lots more articles and footage in the coming years as other anniversaries are noted.

Coffee Table and Picture Books

I'm a sucker for coffee table books and it's a safe bet that if it's good or it features some kind of vintage or retro smut, I've got it. I wont list them so just presume I have them all.

At the moment I'm enjoying a smut-free book called Cartoon Modern- Style and Design in Fifties Animation, which is about exactly what it says. It's not just a treat for the eyes as it seems to have all the information you could possibly need on the subject.

I've got "Since You Went Away..." a collection of WW2 letters from American women to their menfolk overseas, coming. Can't wait to read it. Thanks to a recommendation on Lavender Hill for that!

I've also got my eye on Penny Colman's "Rosie the Riveter".

I got Hopscotch & Handbags for Christmas and I'm really enjoying it. Highly recommend. *written for the U.K. woman, but you'll still be able to relate to much of it*
