I needed to unwind a bit so I sat on the back porch and smoked a CAO America torpedo. I figured I'd give it a try. I like pinstripe-suits, so why not try a pinstripe smoke? It's a barberpole, with two wrappers. It was good. A little stronger than I normally care for, but it had a good draw and a nice leather and coffee set of notes.

Politics--A real he-man political hero--gotta favorite?

It seems today our political appointees are all much to human. I want to know what happened to the dedicated public employee of yesteryears...you know, the Churchills, the TR's....real he-men.

Who's your favorite?

People can say what they want, but Truman get's my vote! Any politican that can say stuff like this is ok in my book:

"...Some day I hope to meet you. When that happens you'll need a new nose,

a lot of beefsteak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below...."

If you haven't seen it yet, Google's project to scan the Life Magazine photo archives (including unpublished ones) from the 1940's and later, is pretty amazing:

Definitely not a gentleman's-only discussion but I couldn't find a better place for it.

There's a vibe in the air that vintage is cool again. Folks in here have known that all along but I keep picking up signals, a lot of it from younger folks, that it's actually ok to look back and appreciate things from yesterday. I hear kids talking Cab Calloway-speak, bands are listening to 78rpms on Victrola's while traveling on the highway, thrift stores are hip again, the ukulele is back, and growing ...

Maybe this belongs in the Cookbook section, but I see Barbecuing as one of the Manly Arts.

I'm trying to hone my barbecue skills this summer. Not grilling, but real, slow-cooked barbecue. I almost bought a smoker this week, but decided that my grill (with the addition of a smoker box) would be better than any of the smokers I could afford right now. Are there any other pit masters out there? I'm up for any tips you can offer.
