Actually it's been out since October but I just got my first disc yesterday and I've been watching it all day. For those of you who may not be hip to the show, it's about two guys who hit the mother road. Tod was a rich kid with all the best possible avenues, but whose father died leaving vast piles of debt, so all Tod has now is this bitchen' convertible 1960 corvette and his best pal Buzz. Buzz is tough "survivor" from Hells Kitchen who was hired on one of Tod's father's boats ...

Today (3 September 2009) marks the 70th anniversary of the start of WW2.

The BBC have put together some archive footage from 1938-9 which highlights events from Chamberlain's Munich agreement to the declaration of war - BBC Archive.

There is also an article on Nicholas Winton, who organised the 'Kindertransports' from Czechoslovakia to Britain, Winton's Children.

I'm sure there will be lots more articles and footage in the coming years as other anniversaries are noted.

I always have a ton of volumes going at once, but at the moment, I'm on huge kicks of Agatha Christie and Wodehouse (such security blankets for me). But last night I started The Red House, by A.A. Milne (yes, he of Winnie-the-Pooh fame). So far, it's of the typical 1920s/30s English Country House Murder genre, but there's something of the same delightful, lighthearted, bedtime story tone of the WTP books about it. Plus, I'm listening to it on audiobook, and there's something comforting about ...

I thought I'd like to give the cream a go again so I picked a jar of Pond's last week. I had wanted Noxema but you can't buy it here in the U.K. and in any case, I don't know if its still made.

Anyway, perhaps my Teflon memory fails me, but I don't remember it being so horribly greasy and difficult to remove. The stuff is at the back of the bathroom cabinet now. Not impressed.

OK, now we have a dedicated thread for you to post images of your favourite packaging; those colourful items that the admen and designers have hypnotised you into buying, those comely comestibles positively shining with old-fashioned goodness.

Most pomades still have quite timeless tins or labels, most notably Royal Cown, Blue Magic Pressing Oil, Murrays (Hair-Glo and Exelento) and Black and White. Brylcreem has ditched its iconic roots and is trying to appeal to the stupid-haired crowd.

God knows how, but we have a little visitor in our first-floor, concrete flat. I saw the little terror legging it across the kitchen floor after I heard an unfamiliar skritchy skratchy sound.

He's somewhere behind the cooker/ cupboards chuckling at us.

Anyway, I get paranoid about rodents nibbling through wires (I had a succession of rats as pets and know what vandals they are) so he/she needs to be caught. Alive of course; we are nice people.

So far I have cut the top off a baited plastic ...

For anyone that is interested, The Sophisticate's Diary now has full instructions on the care of your straight razor.

Do any of you use straight razors? I know there's less than a handful of chaps on here but maybe some of the more 'dangerous dames' are adept at wielding a cut-throat when seeking silky-smooth legs? I can't say I'd take a straight razor into the shower with me though as life-changing catastrophe would only be a slip away.

One cake I made was a chocolate genoise with cherry preserves and a milk chocolate ganauche.

Last year I made my husband an almond buttercake with a salted buttercream frosting. The candies are coated hazelnuts.

This year he wants yellow cake with a chocolate frosting. I'm making a sour cream yellow cake with a bittersweet buttercream frosting.

Incredibly, my husband found one in the area that's almost reasonable (here, a doghouse would go for $200,000 +).

It's even within walking distance of our current apartment. And it was built in 1930.

However (you knew there'd be at least one, right?)....it's a foreclosure. It's bank owned, and the process can be slippery. The last owner decided to get back at the bank by ripping out the entire kitchen. ...
